Best Time for Wildlife Tour in Sri Lanka

The best time to go for Sri Lanka wildlife tour package is during dry time from December to April and June to September. At this time water sources dry up and vegetation thins out which draws out animals to remaining waterholes making it easier to spot them. Weather is also pleasant for safaris and trekking as there’s minimal rainfall.

Itinerary

Arrival in Colombo and Transfer to Yala

Land at Bandanaraike International Airport and a representative will be waiting to welcome you. Get into airconditioned private vehicle and be transferred to Yala National Park. Enjoy varying landscapes from the city to rural villages and then to dry zone wilderness. On the way make stop at Tissamaharama town with deep Buddhist roots where you will tour Tissamaharama Dagoba a massive white stupa aged over 2000 years. Also stroll Tissa Wewa reservoir for birdwatching.

Arrive at Yala in evening and check in at lavish jungle lodge and then head out for first thrilling adventure. Search for elusive residents like leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and also sport birds. After the safari go back to lodge for relaxing overnight stay.

Full Day Safari at Yala and Transfer to Udawalawe

Wake up before dawn and embark on exception jeep safari in Yala National Park when predators are most active. You may spot elusive leopards lounging on rocky outcrops or moving through undergrowth and also other wildlife like herds of elephants. The park is haven for birdwatchers at this hour where you will see birds like crested serpent eagles and majestic peacocks among others.

After safari return to your lodge check out and head for journey to Udawalawe National Park. Along the way stop at Elephant Transit Home which is conservation project for orphaned elephant calves where they get rehabilitated and then released back into wild.

In evening enjoy sunset safari through Udawalawe where you’ll see herds of elephants grazing peacefully. This is perfect opportunity for photos and later check in at eco-friendly lodge near park for overnight stay.

Udawalawe to Sinharaja Rainforest

Enjoy breakfast and go for final game drive in Udawalawe park that is dominated by grasslands and scrub forests and is home to largest elephant population in Sri Lanka. Afterward journey to Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for primary tropical rainforest. It is living museum of biodiversity dating from million years ago.

A local guide will lead on guided nature trek through dense jungles. Spot birds, the forest being home to 95% of endemic birds’ species of Sri Lanka like red faced malkoha among others. You will also spot endemic mammals like purple faced langur and if lucky elusive Sri Lankan leopard.

During trek learn about rare medicinal plants and complex ecosystem which sustain the forest. After the immersive trek retreat to comfy nature resort at edge of forest and relax for the night.

Sinharaja to Bentota

Enjoy breakfast and say goodbye to rainforest by embarking on a coastal journey to beach town of Bentota. Explore the wetland of Madu River on your way. Here, get on private boat for scenic boat safari through mangrove forests. Spot flora and fauna of the wetland and also tour fishing villages and cinnamon island. After excursion continue to Bentota and check into beachfront resort for overnight relaxation.

Bentota to Galle

Adventure of day starts with aquatic tour with boat safari on Bentota River where you spot wildlife particularly reptiles like water monitors and crocodiles. You will also get opportunity for birdwatching like kingfishers diving for breakfast. After safari, head south to historic city of Galle. On the way you may stop at Kanneliya Forest Reserve which forms part of Sinharaja forest complex to explore more flora and fauna.

When you arrive in Galle visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Galle Fort. It is representation of Dutch colonial history meeting breathtaking coastal scenery. It also offers birdwatching opportunities where you will see seabirds and also migratory species against Indian Ocean backdrop.

If there’s still time go for short boat ride to Jungle Beach where you can try out activities like snorkeling. Spend the night at Galle and relax as you absorb this historic fortified city.

Galle to Colombo and Departure

Enjoy breakfast and start journey back to Colombo. On the way visit Muthurajawela Marsh an extensive wetland ecosystem close to Negombo lagoon. Spot water buffalo, reptiles like mugger crocodile and a variety of bird species.

Our representative will then transfer you to Bandaranaike International Airport and you will leave country with memories of wildlife and ecosystems encounters.
